MENTAL HEALTH RESOURCES

Taking care of our mental health is often about reaching out to each other,
listening and connecting as diverse members of one community.

The Parent-Child Resource Centre has a Certified
'Mental Health First Aider' on site for immediate support here at the PCRC.
But sometimes, we need support that is more specific to the challenges we are facing.
Here are some mental health resources that are available in our community.
They are here to help.

Immediate Help:

If you, or someone you know or care about is in distress there is help available.  Contact one of the following resources:

Crisis Services of Waterloo Region  844-437-3247

Some websites:

Mark your calendar:

October 3-9, 2021 is Mental Illness Awareness Week in Canada.
To help bring awareness to this important aspect of total wellbeing,
take a look at a new 2021 microsite:

Mental illness: The cultural connection - Canada (lifeworks.com)

2020 Microsite
– Depression and the pandemic - a deep dive.

 https://www.lifeworks.com/ca/newsletter-content/depression-and-pandemic/

Through articles, an info graphic and a video, the microsite explores:
•The relationship between COVID-19 and depression
•How to deal with financial insecurity and debt stress
•How physical activity can help with depression during the pandemic
•Facing loneliness during the pandemic.

VirtualHopeBox
This is a free mobile app that provides tools for relaxation, coping and distraction.  You can personalize a self care plan that is then available on your smartphone or tablet.

Five steps to mindfulness
There are many ways to become more mindful and care about your life moment by moment. Five tips are:
1.   Take five minutes each day to stop “doing” and experience “being.”
2.   Practice gratitude.
3.   Have compassion
4.   Accept yourself and others
5.   Do not take life’s challenges too personally.

13 Reasons Why

The Nextfilx series 13 Reasons Why is a fictional portrayal of a young person who dies by suicide. While it  has people talking about mental health and suicide prevention, the series can be disturbing. We would caution that the series is graphic and may be a trigger for some.  It is rated for 17 and over  and is not suitable for children.   We would urge parents to prepare for discussions with the young people in their lives who may be watching it.    The Suicide Prevention Council has provided some talking points for discussion.  Here is the link to this resource guide on their web page.
